Get on Board: Public Transport for Everyone
The Get on Board: Public Transport for Everyone project was completed in 2016/17 in partnership with the Department of Planning, Transport and Infrastructure, the City of Playford and Intermethod. The focus of the project, using action based research, was to understand why seniors in the Playford Council area used or didn’t use public transport and what would assist them to do so. The project used surveys, face to face consultation at the Elizabeth shopping centre and community workshops/forums. Some of the key findings from the research included:
- An increase of public transport service frequency may increase the use of public transport.
- An expanded route coverage creating more bus stops could increase the use of public transport.
- A view that poor public transport connectivity prevents people using public transport more often.
We also found that social and safety barriers prevented people from using public transport and that many were concerned with or had witnessed poor behaviour of other passengers.
The project supported the development of a pilot service model which will test the concerns raised in the research and assist with increasing confidence of seniors to use public transport and to provide useful resources for commuters in the City of Playford.
